      综合创新论在二十世纪三十年代的文化哲学论战中产生,在二十世纪八十年代再次亮剑,在新时代又取得新的发展。综合创新论认为中华民族文化只能走“马魂中体西用”的融合创新之路,在学理上与毛泽东文化建设思想殊途同归,与习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想毫不违背,它从哲学的高度洞察到中华民族文化的世界性兴盛是必然趋势,对于构建中华民族文化认同具有十分重要的价值,但一直以来都没有引起理论界的足够重视。综合创新论的发生学、过程论和方法论三重视角,从理论上指明了构建中华民族文化认同的方向和路径。在实践中,坚持以“马克思主义”为思想之基,以“中华民族优秀传统文化”为动力之源,以“西方文化”为它山之石,以习近平新时代中国特色社会主义思想统会中华民族共同理想,系统构建中华民族文化认同,为人类命运共同体建设贡献中国智慧和中国方案。

      The Theory of Comprehensive Innovation emerged from cultural philosophy debates in the 1930s. It was highlighted again in the 1980s and made new progress in the New Era. It has great value for the construction of the cultural identity of the Chinese nation, but it has not attracted sufficient attention from theoretical circles. Within the backdrop of globalization in which all cultures encounter, communicate, and integrate with each other, Comprehensive Innovation Theory could and should play a stronger more role. The Theory of Comprehensive Innovation was put forward by Zhang Dainian, a famous Chinese philosopher. A memorable debate about the “orientation of Chinese cultural development” broke out in 1930s and 1940s when China was facing the loss of its sovereign rights. Some scholars like Hushi, and Chen Xujing, who took the side of “Occidentalism”, advocated overall westernization, renouncing Chinese traditional culture. Scholars like Liang Shumin, who represented the trend of “nationalism”, advocated a retro cultural conservatism and opposed westernization. Scholars like Wang Xinmin, who took the side of “Chinese native culture construction”, suggested improving Chinese native culture, and opposed overall westernization and socialist culture. Scholars like Zhang Dainian who advocated the argument of “Comprehensive Innovation Theory”, put forward the concept of socialist cultural creationism, and opposed both overall westernization and cultural conservatism. Zhang Dainian’s Comprehensive Innovation Theory stood out as the most unique of the various arguments, was accepted widely. Itreceived new support in various eras, thereby becoming an important theory and method of thinking in cultural construction. It is an important guide for constructing the cultural identity of the Chinese nation. Zhang Dainian’s Theory of Comprehensive Innovation was systematically developed during the 1980s. He proposed that in constructing a new socialist culture, we should not only inherit and carry forward our own fine cultural traditions, but also absorb the essence of western culture, thereby gradually forming a new socialist cultural system. In the New Era, Fang Keli, one of the students of Zhang Dainian, further developed Zhang’s Theory of Comprehensive Innovation into a cultural philosophy consisting of “Mahun, Zhongti, Xiyong” or “maintaining the spirit of Marxism, and adopting western culture while keeping Chinese values as the core”. The core of Comprehensive innovation theory is adopting “comprehensive innovation” (maintaining a “Marxist Spirit, and adopting western culture while keeping Chinese values as the core”); and opposing the wholesale westernization of culture, pragmatism and conservatism. Its essence consists of dialectical materialism. Zhang Dainian pointed out that “comprehensive” does not mean simply mixing or piecing things together, but incorporating things of diverse nature, i.e. integrating the essence of ancient and modern Chinese and foreign cultures. In contemporary times, the Theory of Comprehensive Innovation tells us that we should neither blindly reject foreign culture nor break away from traditional culture. Instead, we should adhere to socialism with Chinese characteristics and humbly learn from western scientific culture while “adopting national forms in art” to comprehensively develop national culture. Comprehensive Innovation Theory is the same as the thought of Mao Zedong’s on the Theory of Cultural Construction. Furthermore, it is in accordance with Xi Jinping’s “socialism with Chinese characteristics” in the new era. Both Mao Zedong and Xi Jinping advocate taking references from both ancient and western cultures, and both are confident of the flourishing of the development of socialist culture with Chinese characteristics in the world. The direction and methods with which to build Chinese national cultural identity have been clearly pointed out in theoretical aspect from three perspectives of Comprehensive Innovation Theory. They are the perspectives of occurrence, process, and methodology. The perspective of occurrence emphasizes the occurrence and solution of problems and concerns on solving real cultural identity conflict; the perspective of process theory indicates that Chinese national cultural identity is a process of comprehensive innovation, and concern with regard to process and development; the perspective of methodology attaches importance to the methodological and conceptual wisdom of Chinese traditional cultural identity, for instance, the concept of “he” (和or harmony), which means “harmony in diversity”. Specifically, Comprehensive Innovation Theory, in practice, leads us to build a Chinese national cultural identity as follows: 1. to build Chinese national cultural identity on the ideological basis of “mahun” or “the spirit of Marxism”. 2. to promote Chinese national cultural identity by taking “Zhongti” or the Chinese culture as the source or core of power. 3. to improve Chinese national cultural identity by embracing “Xiyong” or learning or adopting from western culture. 4. to unify the common ideals of all ethnic groups and take Xi Jinping’s idea of “socialism with Chinese characteristics” in the New Era as the highest guide for our actions. According to the Theory of Comprehensive Innovation, an excellent national culture “is not only one nation’s, but essentially is all mankind’s”, and “the excellent elements in various national cultures will be internationalized”. In order to gain wider recognition of the national culture in the New Era, it is necessary to use the theory of Comprehensive Innovation as a theoretical weapon to clearly oppose the false theories of cultural conservatism, cultural nihilism and total westernization at home and abroad. This should be done so as to realize the complementary advantages of and avoid one-sided opposition between national culture and world culture. We should stay true to this mission and strive to promote the creative transformation and development of excellent traditional Chinese culture; deepen the cultural identity of the Chinese nation and build a community of a shared future for the Chinese nation; promote exchanges and dialogue between Chinese civilization and the rest of the world; build a community with a shared future for mankind; and introduce Chinese culture to the world.
